Roughly fifty automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.

Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police state initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A high-ranking official said the incident left him without words and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
