Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection While McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad selection news

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn Tests, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering if he will be fit to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Nash are not included because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will travel to the US as "reserves".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach opting against calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to deputise for Doris if the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
