From Solo Parent Holiday Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Bliss: One Mother's Journey
After the relationship ended, I thought vacations being a solo mother could be easy. I soon realized they were either extremely costly, or seemed exclusively suitable for “traditional” households, or were far too budget that I came home even more exhausted than before I’d left.
Initial Vacation Attempts
The initial attempt, camping alongside companions, went well until the moment came to pack up the tent. Four hours of wrestling with it in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Next, the adventure holiday for solo-parent households. Rappelling and exploring caves were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunkbed ruined my back. We attempted a budget package on the island, but the crowds of traditional families were overwhelming, and poolside conversations with fellow ladies fizzled out since I wasn’t accompanied by a convenient husband for their own husbands to talk to. An excursion to Majorca alongside a pal and her children was wonderful, but the expense was eye-watering.
Finding Pet-Sitting
Then, last autumn, a friend asked if we’d look after her pets within the county while she went to a ceremony. For one peaceful weekend, we walked on the beach, and settled near the fireplace at night. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in Dorset, which proceeded smoothly. Inspired, I subscribed with an annual £99 membership to join a pet-sitting website, through which, in exchange for caring for people’s pets, you reside in their homes without cost. In just a couple of days, I secured a 10-day pet-sit in Sussex, looking after a labrador called Buzz during the time his owners were abroad.
Each day's walks provided the chance to discover stunning nature spots.
It was the initial sit for unknown individuals, but any nerves dissipated the moment we arrived at the gorgeous four-bedroom house and met the gentle Buzz, who lived for tummy rubs. Each day's dog walks gave us the possibility to venture into stunning scenic areas, and, once we returned back, we were able to relax outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were no expensive tourist traps to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and embarked on kayak trips. I experienced lighter and more joyful than ever in years, and could feel my bond alongside my child Polly strengthen every day. I’m not hesitant to say that I wept with happiness. Things felt achievable again.
Is Pet-Sitting Right for You?
Pet-sitting isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer zero duties on holiday other than choosing their upcoming beverage, aren’t fond of pets, or perhaps find it strange regarding staying in a stranger’s bedroom, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. However the soothing pace of ordinary life, with employment stripped out and fresh locations to explore, suits me for me.
This prevents me from slipping into complete idleness, which leaves me feeling restless and oddly hollow. And, financially, house-sitting acts as a life-saver for a single parent. A 10-day break in a similar-sized house within the identical area we stayed could cost me approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.
An Alternative Perspective
Regarding residing in a another person’s home, I discovered it enriching. Even though pet-sitting is a exchange, it is equally an expression of faith among strangers and creatures, which has brought out the finest version of me – my calm, caring and measured side, overflowing with appreciation for the people and locations we discover. I have scheduled an additional short break away, looking after a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, in the coming year, I hope to try house-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of innovative planning, we can see the globe from the comfort of home – it just turns out to be someone else’s.
