JPMorgan Chase Demands Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Access
JP Morgan Chase has told employees moving into its recently built corporate base in Manhattan that they are required to provide their physical characteristics to access the multibillion-dollar building.
Shift from Voluntary to Mandatory
The investment bank had initially planned for the collection of biometric data at its recently opened high-rise to be optional.
Yet, employees of the leading financial institution who have commenced employment at the new headquarters since August have received electronic messages stating that physical scan entry was now "required".
Understanding the Biometric System
Biometric access necessitates employees to scan their hand geometry to gain access access portals in the entrance area instead of swiping their identification cards.
Headquarters Details
The main office building, which reportedly cost $3 billion to develop, will ultimately serve as a home for 10,000 staff members once it is entirely staffed before year-end.
Safety Justification
The financial company opted not to respond but it is assumed that the employment of biological markers for access is created to make the premises better protected.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exemptions for specific personnel who will still be able to use a badge for entry, although the criteria for who will employ more traditional ID access remains unclear.
Supporting Mobile Applications
Complementing the introduction of physical identifier systems, the company has also introduced the "Corporate Access" smartphone application, which acts as a virtual ID and hub for staff resources.
The platform permits users to manage external entry, navigate interior guides of the premises and pre-order meals from the building's multiple food service providers.
Broader Safety Concerns
The implementation of enhanced security measures comes as US corporations, notably those with major presence in NYC, look to increase security following the shooting of the top executive of one of the leading healthcare providers in summer.
The executive, the boss of the insurance giant, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.
Potential Wider Implementation
It is not known if the financial firm aims to implement physical identifier entry for staff at its branches in other important economic centers, such as London.
Employee Tracking Developments
The move comes within discussion over the employment of systems to track workers by their companies, including monitoring physical presence metrics.
Earlier this year, all staff members on mixed remote-office plans were told they are required to come back to the physical location five days a week.
Management Commentary
The company's leader, Jamie Dimon, has characterized JP Morgan's recently opened tower as a "tangible expression" of the organization.
The banker, one of the influential banking figures, recently alerted that the probability of the American markets facing a downturn was significantly higher than many financiers anticipated.
