Old Deep-Sea Nets from French Coast Evolve into Crucial Defense Against Enemy Drones in the War Zone

On the harbor docks of French fishing ports, accumulations of old nets have become a common sight.

The usable duration of marine harvesting nets typically ranges between 12-24 months, after which they become damaged and unusable.

Now, this marine-grade mesh, once used to trawl ocean species from the marine bottom, is being repurposed for an unexpected target: hostile aerial vehicles.

Charitable Project Converts Marine Waste

A Breton charity has transported two consignments of nets totaling 280 kilometers to Ukraine to safeguard soldiers and civilians along the battle areas where hostilities peak.

The enemy deploys small, cheap drones armed with explosives, directing them by remote control for distances of up to 25km.

"During the past 24 months, the war has evolved. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a drone war," commented a charity logistics coordinator.

Strategic Application of Fishing Nets

Military personnel use the nets to establish corridors where aerial vehicle blades become ensnared. This method has been compared to spiders catching flies in a web.

"Military representatives explained they cannot use random fishing gear. They have been sent multiple that are ineffective," the organizer continued.

"The materials we provide are made of horse hair and used for ocean trawling to catch monkfish which are quite powerful and hit the nets with a force comparable to that of a drone."

Expanding Applications

At first deployed by medical personnel safeguarding treatment facilities near the frontline, the nets are now employed on transport routes, overpasses, the healthcare center gateways.

"It's incredible that this elementary solution functions so efficiently," remarked the organization leader.

"We face no shortage of marine gear in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as several companies that process the material have closed."

Logistical Hurdles

The charitable organization was established after community members contacted the organizers requesting help regarding clothing, food and medical supplies for their homeland.

A team of helpers have driven two vehicle loads of humanitarian assistance 2,300km to the border crossing point.

"After being informed that Ukraine sought protective gear, the coastal residents responded immediately," stated the humanitarian coordinator.

Aerial Combat Development

Russia is using real-time visual vehicles similar to those on the retail industry that can be piloted by remote radio control and are then packed with explosives.

Enemy operators with real-time video feeds steer them to their destinations. In various locations, Ukrainian forces report that no movement occurs without drawing the notice of swarms of "lethal" kamikaze drones.

Protective Tactics

The marine mesh are suspended from structures to create netting tunnels or used to cover fortifications and transport.

Ukrainian drones are also fitted with fragments of material to deploy against hostile aircraft.

During summer months, Ukraine was confronting more than numerous aerial vehicles each twenty-four hour period.

Global Aid

Hundreds of tonnes of old nets have also been contributed by marine workers in Nordic countries.

An ex-marine industry representative commented that regional fishermen are extremely pleased to support the defense cause.

"They are proud to know their discarded equipment is going to assist in protection," he told reporters.

Funding Limitations

The organization has exhausted the funds to dispatch additional materials this year and conversations are progressing for Ukraine to provide transport to pick up the nets.

"We plan to support acquire the material and package them but we lack the financial capacity to continue running convoys ourselves," commented the organization representative.

Practical Constraints

An armed services communicator reported that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the eastern territory, about 75 percent of which is now reported to be occupied and controlled by enemy troops.

She added that opposition vehicle controllers were continuously developing ways to breach the netting.

"Mesh does not represent a complete solution. They are just one element of protection against drones," she stressed.

An ex-agricultural business owner expressed that the individuals he encountered were affected by the help from maritime regions.

"The fact that those in the fishing industry the other side of Europe are providing material to help them defend themselves has created moving moments to their eyes," he finished.
