United Kingdom Broadens Methanol Poisoning Alert Roster with Eleven Destinations
British authorities has included an additional eleven new nations to its official alert register concerning the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted beverages.
This revised travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Just last month, authorities had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to a number of high-profile events such as the fatal loss of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even small amounts of methanol can lead to blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a poisonous industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for human consumption.
While it is inherently formed during the creation of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.
But in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to identify.
Authorities' Guidance for Travellers
Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer emphasized that each tourist should know the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.
"When you are consuming alcohol overseas, opt for well-known venues and refrain from local brews or free shots," Falconer advised.
"If something seems unusual, like a hangover that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – contact a doctor immediately."
The entire list of countries noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
