Woman Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed to her neck area in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter within Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
Djeison Rafael, 21, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, charged over the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder however after the victim's passing charges were upgraded to include murder.
Police Response
The force said officers would be around the city centre through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand the motive behind.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said co-workers reported hearing a commotion at about 21:00.
"Many co-workers use transit services, ride the tramline... our security is compromised fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, said he came the city quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act occurred, you know, it's horrible."
